Birmingham, Alabama, Sunday, 12 June 2011:

Got all checked in today, met my dorm roommate.  She and I both get cold (even in 95 degree Birmingham, so we turned down the air conditioner in the room).

Went to dinner and orientation, and the staff introduced our course coordinators.

I’ve met lots of nice people.   Good thing they’re all wearing name tags, because I’d never remember them all.  If they were dead, no problem.  I remember dead people’s names really easily.

I also have to remember they speak a different language down here.  One time when I was at Samford I said to some friends, “Do you guys want to go get something to eat?”

They looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language.  They sat there with their mouths opened, obviously stumped for something to say, one opened her mouth and said, “You GUYS?  What ‘s that supposed to mean.  We all say Y’all down here.”

So now, I know how to talk southern, I just don’t always remember to do it.  Y’all.  Y’all. Y’all.  You’d think I’d remember that.

Classes start early tomorrow, so it’s lights out for me.  Good night, y’all!
